Your Role…Your Responsibility

Posted on June 14th, 2017.

Last Sunday, this young man approached me at the product table after service. His mother told me he has watched my videos and heard my story many times. As he stepped up to say hello, he asked if he could see my ear. I knew what he meant. He didn’t just want me to turn my head so that he could see it attached like everyone else. No, he wanted to SEE my ear. I put my ear in my hand and said, “Speak to the hand!”

What a sweet young man. Respectful, attentive and kind. While I know some people are innately wired to have those attributes, I also know the influence of parents contributes as well.

With Father’s Day only a few days away, I think about the impact dads have on their children. I am a father, and while I am sure I haven’t done everything right in every situation, I am so thankful I had an incredible example to model after in my dad. He knew the perfect balance of discipline and grace, work and fun, firmness and leniency. Many times in my life, I have asked myself…what would my dad do?

If you are a father, and especially if you have young children at home, please understand the responsibility God has given you in the ability to speak truth into their lives. They will be the product of what you put into them. Show them the firmness of correction, but be quick to extend mercy when it is deserved. Give them reasons to laugh, and hold them when they cry. Let them hear you as you call their name before heaven, and let them yell “Dad” through giggles as you tickle them before bedtime. Understand the role God has given you in their lives and walk in that role with full authority and humility before God!

Happy Father’s Day!

Love,

Dave
